LOST CLASSICS, RENEWED ACQUAINTANCES

Second only to those applauding The Beloved Tobacco Maven's (TBTM) reliable advice and keen palate, the letters we receive most frequently from our readers are those asking about once favorite tobaccos that have disappeared from the market. This installment of Maven's Choice attempts to provide some answers, as well as introduce anew some of TBTM's old favorites.

Long-time standard AMPHORA has been taken off the American market because sales were waning and marketing/distribution efforts were found to be unjustified revenues. Hobby to you is business to them. Lucky for you (and me), however, Orlik Tobacco Co. of Denmark - one of the world's largest manufacturers - has reproduced the AMPHORA formula under the SKANDINAVIK label. Likewise, one of the all-time great outdoorsman's tobaccos, EDGEWORTH "SLICED," is back on the market, a cause for celebration offshore, onshore, in field, and stream. W.O. LARSEN'S CLASSIC, a Danish treat, and RATTRAY's 7 RESERVE, a superb Scottish/English mixture, have also stood the time test and deserve attention.

W.O. Larsen's Classic
"Don't bother to wrap it, I'll eat it right here," is my response every time I open a tin of this truly delicious tobacco. It has a deep bouquet, and a sweetness that suggests something from the finest pastry shop you have visited - a fruit, nut, and honey suggestion, yet with a clearly tobacco nose.

A light, Larsen's Classic has a room aroma that echoes the unlit bouquet, but is surprisingly light and not at all cloying. The taste similarly echoes the aroma, with the natural sweetness of golden Virginias carefully balanced by a mix of leaf from South America and Africa, anchored by a deep, rich Black Cavendish for a bass note.

This formula has been fine-tuned by Larsen for many years. It differs from American aromatic blends in its texture, which is not gooey or wet, and in the top-quality leaf used, so that Larsen's Classic tastes like tobacco underneath the crowd-pleasing aromas. For lovers of aromatic blends, it's a dream smoke.

Scandinavic "Regular"
The much-abused term "Cavendish" is supposed to mean a blend of different leaf that is flavored (cased), pressed into blocks (cakes) under steam, and left to mature under controlled temperatures. Afterward, the Cavendish can be sliced or broken out in a factory tumbler (ready-rubbed). In the latter form, the multi-layered, pressed aspect is still visible, and the density of the pieces slows down the burn rate, for a cooler smoke. That's what Cavendish really is, fellow tobaccophiles, and don't let any tobacco weenies tell you different!

Skandinavik is exactly as described earlier, echoing its Amphora source of inspiration. Its pouch aroma is subtle, suggestive of prunes and apples, and the flavor when lit is broad, pleasant, and mouth-filling. TBTM does not regard Skandinavik as a gourmet treat - it was not intended as such - but it is a reliable and tasty everyday, everyplace smoke. Thanks, Orlik Tobacco, for being "regular guys."

Edgeworth "Sliced"
Invented at the turn of the 20th century, this all-American blend was first offered to the public in 1903, by the Larus & Brother Co. of Richmond. Sliced and stood on "edge" in rectangular tins to show the costly outer layer of the Cavendish cake of Burley and Bright leaf, it was promoted as being "worth" the higher price. Hence the name "Edgeworth."

Today, Edgeworth "Sliced" (flake) is, ironically, manufactured in Europe and imported to the U.S. It is a deep, dark Burley blend, heavily cased with molasses, licorice, and other he-man flavors. One slice or two, folded over lengthwise and placed into the pipe in a column, teased out at the top for better lighting, will last for hours, even in a breeze. Rich and full of flavor, but cool and with no bite whatsoever, this American classic is not for the timid, and is better suited to rugged Teddy Roosevelt types. Perfect for land or sea voyages of discovery. Use the empty tins for dry matches or fishhooks. Woof!

Rattay's 7 Reserve
Flat-out and up-front, Rattray's 7 Reserve is one of the best mixtures available. Why? Because it is truly subtle, with an interplay of flavors from all of the components and a myriad of overtones. Unlike some popular English/Scottish style blends that clobber the tongue with excessive Latakia and come off as one-dimensional, 7 Reserve plays off red and gold Virginias against Turkish, Latakia, and natural English Black Cavendish (pressed and baked black in cakes, but unflavored). And it's not only proportions. True, many English/Scottish mixtures are first blends of components, with the Virginias bulked and matured separately, as are the condiment tobaccos. Then, the mini-base blends are mixed and aged before packing. Medium strength, this century-old classic will satisfy the connoisseurs and traditional English/Scottish mixture lovers all day, because it doesn't assault them. Matured Virginia lovers (like TBTM) will appreciate it as a change of pace. House brand Latakia lusters will miss the point in any case, because their tongues are stoned. A TBTM desert-island choice.
