The Envelope Please...
Two notable briar brethren were recently crowned 'Pipesmoker of the Year' by pipesmoking councils based in their respective countries. English inventor Trevor Baylis was awarded the coveted "Pipesmoker of the Year" by the
Pipesmoker's Council in London. Baylis has lived a storied life; he's responsible for the invention of the wind-up radio, which he mass-produces in South Africa. Also a television stuntman, Baylis was recently awarded the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) at 13 Buckingham Palace. The 35th recipient of the Council's award, Baylis was feted at the Savoy Hotel in January.Across the Channel, French horticulturist/TV personality Michel Lis was named Le premier fumeur de pipe de France by La Confrerie et les Maitres Pipiers de St. Claude. Pardon our French; in other words, he's France's most celebrated pipe enthusiast. Lis is best known for his work as host of an extremely popular gardening program in France. |
Smoke Screen
Two pipe-related video releases recently caught our eye. Uptown's Smoke Shop, of Nashville, has produced a series entitled Great Carvers of Our Day, which goes behind the scenes with some of the great pipemakers of our time. There are three volumes in this informative series. The first features Danish carvers, the second is on Julius Vesz and his Toronto shop, and the last depicts St. Claude and its rich history. Peterson of Dublin recently introduced The Making of the Peterson Pipe, which focuses on the traditional tools and methods of the Peterson craftsmen, who've been honing their skills since the company's inception in 1865. Hollco Rohr distributes the Peterson tape. For info., call 800-247-6653.
